Nindya Nareswari (b. 1989) is an Indonesian light designer and artist who based in Berlin, Germany.
Her fascination with light began in 2008 during the second year of her bachelor degree in product design at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Indonesia. In 2010, an internship at Sakai Design Associate in Japan sparked her interest in materiality, while her time at Ingo Maurer in Germany ignited her passion for light art. Pursuing her passion further, she earned a master’s degree in Architectural Lighting Design from Hochschule Wismar in Germany, completing her studies in 2014.
Nareswari’s artistic practice mainly explores human perception and ephemeral property of light. In her body of work, light is depicted as a universal yet deeply personal medium to reevaluate our way of seeing and shaping emotions. Her work ranges from light objects and sculptures, light photography, to set and stage lighting design, and light art installations. Her Bamboo Lamp was nominated for the Indonesian Good Design Selection 2010 for the lighting design category. Her artworks have been exhibited internationally including at Berlin Fashion Week, Memphis Gardens in Melbourne, and National Gallery of Indonesia. Core to her practice are material, experience, and space, with a strong emphasis on experimenting with light as an intangible material. By combining light with tangible materials, she creates ever-changing patterns, movement, and color to challenge visual perception and evoke narratives for the viewer while experiencing the artwork.
